Yet another wonderful ougss show.
This review will not be very different from most of my previous OUGSS reviews. As ever, this was extremely entertaining. As ever, most leading actors were singing brilliantly. As ever, we had a lot of fun. And I am quite glad that there are still quite a few Gilbert & Sullivan works we haven't seen as this gives us something to look forward to :)
Probably the main difference from the previous shows was the absence of Zosya. The leading female character (Josephine) was played by Anna Sideris. And what a superb perfomance this was! I also enjoyed Little Buttercup, played by Katherine Fairhurst. To be honest, while her voyce may not have been as strong as Anna's, I was equally enchanted by her. Perhaps this happened because her songs were especially toughing (or unexpectedly funny, as it was the case with baby farming), perhaps her character was acted through more harmoniously - I cannot really say.
As for the male characters - the best one was Captain Corcoran (Robert Hazle). An excellent singer and an excellent actor - just watch his transformation from a captain to a sailor! Thomas Wade (Ralph Backstraw) sang well, as usually, but he really should start doing some acting. Of course, you cannot expect much from a musical production, let alone a student performance, but he was absolutely emotionless and identical in every single scene - whether he was happy, miserable and/or in love. Shame really, for other people performed at least very decently. For example an OUGSS veteran, Huw Davies (Dick Deadeye).
I should also mention Samuel Swinnerton, who was the musical director, the pianist, the conductor and the announcer. Good job! All four of them :)
